Eating forgetfully in Ramadhan but then purposely eating

Fatwaa ID: 2199

Question:
If someone forgets they were fasting (Ramadan) and started chewing gum then realized but carried on chewing bc they were embarrassed do they have to do qadha only or kaffarah too
They’re in class So they feel embarrassed to go and spit it out

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

At the outset, we wish to remind you that we are answerable to Allaah Ta’aala and it is His pleasure alone that we seek. We are not answerable to the people nor are we bothered about what they will say if that is something that will bring the displeasure of Allaah Ta’aala. To disobey Allaah Ta’aala and violate the laws of the Shari’ah out of fear of embarrassment from people is a grave sin.

Nevertheless, in the enquired situation, only qadhaa will be necessary. Kaffaarah is not necessary. However, sincere tawbah and istighfaar must be made.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
