Elderly parents fighting

Fatwaa ID: 1508

Old parents fighting.
Should a son interfere in their arguments?
Or take side, guide them
Or let them resolve it themselves.
The fights does not involve the son or other family members.
Will he be answerable to Allah?

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

When parents fight amongst themselves, the children should not get involved unless one is being oppressed. In such a case, they should consult their local scholars for advice on how to deal with that. In general cases where one is not being oppressed, the children should let the parents resolve it themselves. It is natural for couples to argue and have fights.

As children, you should make du’aa for their well-being and love. You should also do ta’leem daily with the family. Read the Ahaadith of Nabi ﷺ and his seerah. Together with the family, study the manners and interactions of Nabi ﷺ. There is great benefit in this family ta’leem. It is educational and spiritually uplifting. It also bonds the family connection. It brings about the mercy of Allaah Ta’aala.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
