Enjoining upon good even though the person gets angry

Fatwaa ID: 1530

Question:
Asalamualaikum mufti sahib,

What do I do in the circumstance of, knowing someone isn’t praying their five daily prayers and there is no way for me to tell this person to go and pray because they get angry when I do so and say that it’s none of my concern. Are there any duaas that I can recommend to them?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

  1. Continue reminding them with wisdom and love even if they become angry. If we were to see them falling into the fire, we would try to save them at all costs even if they were to get angry. The Fire of the Hereafter is even more severe. When we look at the seerah and the Ahaadith, we find that Nabi ﷺ persistently gave da’wah to the same people. They cursed at him. They spat at his blessed face. Yet, he continued to go back because he wanted good for them. This is the demand and right of believer: enjoin upon good and forbid from evil.
It is certainly your concern as a Muslim. We are a brotherhood. The good of one is the good of all Muslims. The bad and downfall of one is a downfall of all. We want everyone to excell and get higher places in Jannah.
  2. Make du’aa to Allaah Ta’aala daily for their guidance. You may make du’aa in your native tongue. You may perform two rak’ahs as Salaatut Haajah for this as well.
  3. If they are living with you, then start doing ta’leem in the home daily. This refers to sitting as a family for a few minutes and reading and studying the Deen of Allaah Ta’aala. You should read books that mention the virtues of different things, such as Riyadh as-Saliheen. Likewise, read the seerah and the stories of the Sahaabah (R). Invite the person in question to join. Even if he does not join, continue reading daily with the others. This family study creates a desire to do good and it bonds the family. It brings about the mercy of Allaah Ta’aala.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
