Exchanging gifts on Eid

Fatwaa ID: 1041

Question:
Assalamu alaikum,

Is exchanging gifts on Eid from the sunnah?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

We were unable to find any narrations suggesting that giving and/or receiving gifts on ‘Eid is a sunnah. However, expressing one’s happiness on the day of ‘Eid is commendable and encouraged. Exchanging gifts is a form of expressing one’s happiness. It is also a means of strengthening and increasing love between one another. Thus, it is permissible to give and/or receive gifts on ‘Eid. There is no reprehension in this.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
