Fast broken due to illness

Fatwaa ID: 996

Question:
Assalamu Alaikum
If a brother breaks his fast due to illness, does he need to remake only 1 fast or 60.
The situation was this:
The brother woke up not feeling good but kept his fast. However throughout the day he had an unbearable headache as well as stomach pain. The brother couldn’t move and was in a huge amount of discomfort that he couldn’t sleep. He kept his fast as long as he could but then later threw up and decided he needed water due to the pain. His pain continued the whole night and he constantly threw up until finally he felt better. Was it allowed for him to break his fast due to the immense pain?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

If one is sick or unwell such that it becomes genuinely difficult on him to continue the fast, then he will be excused to break it. In such a case, only qadhaa of one day will be necessary. In the enquired situation, if the above reflects the reality, then he was excused.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
