Fasting while Anorexic

Fatwaa ID: 1187

Question:
Assalamualaikum, should I fast if I am suffering from anorexia? I am very conflicted this year. None of my doctors can provide me an Islamic perspective.

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

May Allaah Ta’aala grant you shifaa and make it easy for you. If your doctor or psychiatrist advises you that it is harmful for you to fast in the current situation, then you will be excused to miss the fasts now and make them up afterwards when you are better. However, continue to engage in other ‘ibaadaat during the blessed month of Ramadhan. Your inability to fast should not result in you being spiritually deprived during this month.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
