Financial responsibility of a girl

Fatwaa ID: 487

Question:
السلام عليكم
What’s the ruling on a father financially looking after an unmarried daughter, although she’s capable of looking after herself?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

The father is responsible to financially provide for his daughter until she gets married, in which case the responsibility transfers to the husband. The above is even if she has the ability to earn for herself. A woman does not have to earn for herself. However, in the case where she has her own funds, the father may use that to provide for her maintenance. If she is earning, and it is within the boundaries of Shari’ah, then she should be considerate of her father’s situation.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
