Fatwaa ID: 793

Question:
Is it the obligation of a muslim to finish the quran once a month

Who doesnt do it has made hidjra from the quran
Muhammed صلى الله عليه و سلم said to 3abduLLAH ibn 3amr Ibn 3as:
Read the Quran once a month.

And Ibn 3abbas said:

Whoever doesnt finish the quran in a month, has made hidjra from the quran

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

It is not obligatory upon a person to complete a rendition of the Qur’aan once a month. However, it is advisable to do so and greatly rewarding. One should strive to do this. The Sahaabah (R) would complete multiple renditions monthly. When Nabi ﷺ advised ‘Abdullah Ibn ‘Amr (R) to complete one khatmah a month, he remarked that he was able to do more and therefore negotiated with Nabi ﷺ and thus brought it to one khatmah every week.

The stronger the connection with the Qur’aan, the closer a person will be with Allaah Ta’aala.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
