Question:
Assalamu alaykum. Is fishing as a hobby makhrooh or haraam during the month of Ramadaan? And are there any ahaadith or valid reasons to explain why? Jazakallah in advance.

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

Fishing, irrespective of purpose or reason, does not affect the validity of one’s fast. However, it is haraam to fish as a sport if one will not be consuming or benefitting from the fish. Shari’ah has sanctified life. It is not permissible to kill something in vain. If one will be eating the fish or benefitting from it, then that is permissible in all conditions.
