Question:
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa rahmatullah,
When ordering something at a cafe, I asked the employee to wash the utensils that would touch my food to avoid cross-contamination with haram food, and they said they would wipe it down with food-safe wipes. Would that be sufficient to remove the impurity from tongs or a knife?
Jazaakum Allaahu khayran.
Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.
According to the Hanafi legal school, as long as the impurity is removed, the item would be regarded as pure. Washing is not necessary. In the enquired situation, food-safe wipes will remove any impurity or remnants from the utensils. Thus, it will be sufficient.
And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
