Foster relationships

Fatwaa ID: 341

Question:
As-salam alaykum respected Mufti Sahib, If woman A pumps her breast milk for her child X and gives it to woman B to give to her child Y because it was not needed by child X anymore, how do the rules of radaa apply? Do all of woman A’s children become child Y’s radaai siblings? Also, does child Y’s father become woman A’s mahram? Does woman A need to continue wearing hijab in front of child Y’s father? Jazakum Allahu khayr for all of your help. May Allah (swt) reward you infinitely. Ameen.

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

  1. The biological children of the foster mother (woman A) will become foster siblings to the child who consumed her milk (child Y).
  2. The father of the foster child (Y) will not become a mahram to the the foster mother (A). The laws of hijaab and inter-gender interactions will be fully applicable between them. Marriage between them is permissible.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
