Free item from canceled subscription

Fatwaa ID: 1542

Question:
Assalam U Alaikum.
I bought s certain item from a compnay for free as they werre offering a free trial if you buy subscription to receive that item every month. I had no intention to repurchase it as I just wanted it for single use.
Once I received the item I cancelled the subscription and one of the reasons that were given for cancelling subscriptions was that ‘I dont feel like continuing’. So I choose that option and cancelled it.
My qs is would it be permissible for me to consume that item?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

We take note of the details of your query. The above is a marketing strategy. They offer such free trials to lure customers. They know for a fact that many customers will leave after the free trial and they expect that. Accordingly, the item in question is permissible for you. You may consume it.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
