Gave zakaah on the wrong date

Fatwaa ID: 542

Question:
Assalamu aalykum ww
If someone gave zakah for the past 8/9 years in ramamdan and now they realised they actually became صاحب نصاب in rabi Al thani, do they change the time of giving zakat to rabi Al thani or give it in ramamdan like they have always done? As the year has become confusing

Does zakat need to be given on a expensive car

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

  1. Ideally, the amounts and years should be backdated and the original date in Rabi’ ath-Thaani should be adopted. If you are able to do so, then you should do that. However, considering that it has been almost a decade that you are now giving your zakaah on a specific date in Ramadhan and it would be very difficult to backdate it, you will be excused to continue giving your zakaah on that date in Ramadhan.
  2. There is no zakaah on personal items. This includes expensive cars.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
