Giving a zakaatable amount to an eligible recipient

Fatwaa ID: 2177

Question:
Assalamualykum.
If I give zakat to some one who is eligible of taking zakat… and that amount is for example 50,000 then… is he or she in turn has to pay zakat of that amount??

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

At the outset, many of the jurists have advised against giving an eligible person zakaah funds equivalent to the nisaab or more unless there is a justifiable reason. Nonetheless, if an eligible person is given zakaah funds, then whatever amount of it is remaining on his zakaah date would be subject zakaah. If he does not have a zakaah date and he is given the nisaab amount or more or the amount together with what he owns now reaches the nisaab, then that date wherein he reaches that amount will become his zakaah date. He will thus assess his wealth the following year on this exact date and pay zakaah if he has the nisaab amount or more. If he reaches a flat zero during the year, then his zakaah date would reset.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
