Giving away something without permission

Fatwaa ID: 1818

If one left a bag of clothing at someone’s house, due to a member of that household saying it is okay, and then someone else from that household gave it all away to charity without consulting the one whose clothing it was – is the one who gave it away responsible for reimbursing the one whose clothing they gave away? (If they knew it wasn’t their clothing, but perhaps they didn’t know whose clothing it was specifically)

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

A person should be cognizant and careful when dealing with other’s belongings. If it does not belong to him, then he should not touch it. In the enquired situation, the person who gave away the bag of clothing without verifying will be responsible and accountable. He will have to reimburse the owner for this.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
