Giving discounts during unIslamic holidays

Fatwaa ID: 1882

Assalamu alaykum. Is it permissible for a muslim store owner to give discounts for haram holidays e.g. halloween discount/christmas discount?

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

As Muslims, we are sensitive to our beliefs and values. Giving discounts for unIslamic holidays, although for business purposes, is a form of showing support and legitimizing their ways. It will not be permissible to give discounts for such holidays. The proceeds therefrom may be void of barakah. However, if one gives a general sale and that happens to coincide with their holidays, e.g., winter sale, end of year sale, monthly sale, etc., then that is permissible. It should be noted that it is not permissible to sell items and goods that are specific to their holiday.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
