Giving gift cards as zakaah

Fatwaa ID: 1088

Asalaam Alaykum,

Is buying gift cards to grocery stores and distributing them also sufficient as discharging zakaat?

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

Purchasing gift cards and distributing them to eligible paupers as zakaah is sufficient and permissible. When doing so, one should try to either keep the gift card general or to a store which will be of benefit to the recipient.

The card value will be considered as discharged. Any cost that may come about when purchasing the card or filling it will be on the donor. It cannot be deducted from the zakaah funds.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
