Giving more when returning a debt

Fatwaa ID: 1269

Question:
السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته
Dear Muftian Kiraam
If one is in debt and pays off his debt while giving extra from his side happily would this be considered interest?
Is it a sunnah of Rasul ﷺ to give more than what was given(intentionally from the debtor?).

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

When returning a loan, if the debtor voluntarily and happily gives more as a taken of appreciation, then that is permissible and commendable. Nabi ﷺ advised us to do such as well. However, it is necessary to remember that this extra amount cannot be conditioned, demanded or even expected. If it is, then that will count as riba.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
