PERFORMING UMRAH WHILST HAVING A DEBT

Fatwaa ID: 025

Question:

Assalmualaikum. I pray that this finds you well, I have made intentions to go umrah with my parents. I am a female single mother and I have low income. Initially I had the complete funds to pay for the trip but after making a substantial deposit I had a reduction in my income and as a result I cannot pay the remainder. Is it permissable for me to borrow money from someone to complete my umrah with the intentions of paying it back when I return? I know you must be debt free but if I cancel my trip and postpone to a time when I am in a better financial position then I will lose my deposit. Which for me is alot of money.

please advise me.

Answer:

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

Sister in Islaam,

It is not a requisite for the validity of one’s ‘umrah to be debt-free[1]. You may borrow money from someone to complete your ‘umrah. The ‘umrah will be valid.

We make du’aa that Allaah Ta’aala accepts your ‘umrah and grants you barakah in your wealth. Aameen.

And Allaah Ta’aala Knows Best.
