Going out of i’tikaaf to pick up and drop off son

Fatwaa ID: 1018

Question:
Assalamualaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,
If one is going to do i’tikaf in the masjid for the last 10 nights, would it be permissible to get out and pick up his son from his house and bring him to the masjid, and also walk him back home, but the father doesn’t enter the house or engage in any other activities. The reason for this is that after Isha Jamat and taraweeh it is dark outside and it is for his safety. Kindly respond as soon as possible as the dad will be entering I’tikaf tomorrow inshallah. Jazakumuallahu khairan

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

We take note of the details of your query. We understand that you are enquiring about sunnah i’tikaaf. If one steps out of the masjid to pick up or drop off his son, then that will invalidate the sunnah i’tikaaf. One is only permitted to step out for essential needs such as relieving oneself, obligatory ghusl, food, etc. The situation in question is not an essential need.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
