Going to the courtyard of the masjid during i’tikaaf

Fatwaa ID: 1040

Question:
Asalam alaikum

What’s the ruling of having food in the masjid’s courtyard during Itekaaf

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

A person in i’tikaaf must remain in the masjid. He may not come out except for essentials such as relieving himself. Eating outside is not an essential. He must eat inside the masjid. He may not eat outside of the masjid. As for the courtyard of the masjid, it may or may not be part of the masjid. This depends on the designation and intention of those in charge when the masjid was built. You may refer to them to find out the demarcation of the masjid.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
