Question:
Asalamualikum,
My grandmother is nearly 80 yrs old, and she is observing iddah of 4 months and 10 days after my grandfathers death. Is it necessary that she spend her iddah period in the house where my grandfather passed away, or can she move into my home where I can attend to her daily needs?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

May Allaah Ta’aala elevate your grandfather’s status in Jannah and make he grant you and the family sabr jameel.

In principle, it is necessary for a woman to observe her ‘iddah in her marital home. However, if due to elderly age she requires assistance and there is no one present there to assist her, then she will be excused to observe the ‘iddah elsewhere where assistance will be available to her. If there is no genuine need, then she must observe it in her marital house.
