Hady vs Udh-hiyah

Fatwaa ID: 1145

Question:
ASA Mufti sahib,

Is Hady & Udhiya the same? And which one is required for a Hajji, if they are different?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

Hady and udh-hiyah are not the same. Hady refers to a sacrificial animal that is offered in the Haram Sanctuary by one preforming Hajj Tamattu’ or Qiraan (Hajj and ‘Umrah together). This is also known as Dam ash-Shukr. Udh-hiyah or qurbaani refers to that sacrificial animal which is slaughtered on the days of ‘Eid al-Adh-ha by adult residents who are financially able. A person in Hajj may be obligated to do both, depending on his condition and type of Hajj.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
