Hajar or Hajera, Wife’s breastmilk

Fatwaa ID: 646

Question:
Asalaamu alaykum wrwb Mufti. I hope that you are well.

What is the proper name of Prophet Ibrahim AS wife and mother of Ismael? Haajar or Haajarah? Which one is better to use or are both equally ok?

Can a husband and older children eat/drink their mother’s breast milk? Eg substitute it for regular milk in recipes

Jazakallahu khairan

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

  1. The correct name of the mother of Sayyiduna Isma’il ﷺ is Haajar (هاجَر). The common distortions to Haajarah or Haajirah are incorrect and should not be used. However, it should be noted that Haajirah itself as a name is suitable.
  2. No. It is haraam for the husband to drink his wife’s breastmilk or anyone else’s. Similarly, it is haraam for children beyond the age of two lunar years to drink their mother’s breastmilk or anyone else’s. Breastmilk is only permissible for children below the age of two lunar years.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
