Hajj badal

Fatwaa ID: 1177

Question:
Can someone do their own hajj and hajj badal for parents at the same time? Or can you do hajj badal before your own hajj?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

  1. No. You cannot perform Hajj for yourself and Hajj Badal for one of your parents at the same time. One Hajj is sufficient for one person only.
  2. A person who has not performed his fardh Hajj yet may perform Hajj Badal on behalf of another person. The Hajj will count on behalf of that person only. It will not suffice for the person who is doing the Hajj. However, it should be noted that if Hajj is fardh on this person, then it is prohibitively disliked for him to delay his own Hajj for someone else’s Hajj. He should first perform his own Hajj. If Hajj is not fardh on him, then too it is makrooh but tazeehi.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
