Half-niqaab

Question:
Assalamu’alaikum

What is the Shar’i position on the half-niqab ? Is there a definition of Niqab in the books ?
It is a Niqab which doesn’t cover the upper half of the face i.e. leaves the eyes and forehead uncovered. So the nose downwards is covered. While it definitely covers the face, the beauty of the eyes are enhanced to an extent when the forehead is open.

Please give proofs if possible because I need to give an explanation of the position I hold.

As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

Niqaab refers to that which covers the face. When discussing this, the jurists all mention the wajh, the face. The face is from the tip of the head where the hair generally grows until the bottom of the chin, and from the tragus on one side to the other. Ideally, the niqaab should cover the entire face. However, due to the difficulty in many cases, an exception is made for the eyes. There is no difficulty in covering the forehead and the eyebrows. Leaving them uncovered often defeats the purpose of the niqaab. The purpose of the niqaab is to conceal one’s beauty from strangers. This is not achieved when half of the face or a large portion of it is left uncovered. Furthermore, as we analyze the seerah and the books of Ahaadith, we find that the niqaab would cover the entire face such that the one sporting it would not be recognized. Accordingly, when wearing a niqaab, one should modestly cover the entire face with the exception of the eyes if difficult.

A “half-niqaab” does not qualify as a niqaab. It is rather called a liqaam or a lithaam. One should not wear such a “niqaab” in public.

تفسير روح المعاني (الأحزاب 59)
عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سِيرِينَ قالَ: سَألْتُ عُبَيْدَةَ السَّلْمانِيَّ عَنْ هَذِهِ الآيَةِ ﴿يُدْنِينَ عَلَيْهِنَّ مِن جَلابِيبِهِنَّ﴾ فَرَفَعَ مِلْحَفَةً كانَتْ عَلَيْهِ فَتَقَنَّعَ بِها وغَطّى رَأْسَهُ كُلَّهُ حَتّى بَلَغَ الحاجِبَيْنِ وغَطّى وجْهَهُ وأخْرَجَ عَيْنَهُ اليُسْرى مِن شِقِّ وجْهِهِ الأيْسَرِ، وقالَ السُّدِّيُّ: تُغَطِّي إحْدى عَيْنَيْها وجَبْهَتَها والشِّقَّ الآخَرَ إلّا العَيْنَ، وقالَ اِبْنُ عَبّاسٍ وقَتادَةُ: تَلْوِي الجِلْبابَ فَوْقَ الجَبِينِ وتَشُدُّهُ ثُمَّ تَعْطِفُهُ عَلى الأنْفِ وإنْ ظَهَرَتْ عَيْناها لَكِنْ تَسْتُرُ الصَّدْرَ ومُعْظَمَ الوَجْهِ،وفِي رِوايَةٍ أُخْرى عَنِ الحَبْرِ رَواها اِبْنُ جَرِيرٍ وابْنُ أبِي حاتِمٍ وابْنُ مَرْدَوَيْهِ تُغَطِّي وجْهَها مِن فَوْقِ رَأْسِها بِالجِلْبابِ وتُبْدِي عَيْنًا واحِدَةً.
