Harming plants and animals

Fatwaa ID: 1459

Asalamualaikum Mufti Sahib

Is it sin to harm plants and animals, e.g. to snap branches off a tree to make space in your garden or to cut down trees to make space,

What about killing household insects like spiders?

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

Shari’ah has honored life. It has honored those things that benefit us. Everything makes the dhikr of Allaah Ta’aala. One should not harm plants or animals unnecessarily. Accordingly, it is permissible to snap branches and cut down trees to make space. As for killing household insects, if they are harmful, then they should be killed. If they are not harmful, then it would be better to dispose of them outside instead of killing them.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
