Helping non-Muslim friends and neighbors

Fatwaa ID: 1721

Assalamualaikum. My questions is regarding helping of Non-Muslim people. If they are in your neighbour or friends, and they are going through financial difficulties, is it ok to help them out with a view that they may get attracted to Islam due to your helpfulness? Also will there be any Sawaab for helping non muslim people. Jazak Allah.

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

Consider the following verse,

Allah does not forbid youpl from those who have neither combated you over religion nor evicted you from your homes—that you deal with them very kindly and equitably. Indeed, Allah loves the equitable. [Mumtahinah 8]

It is encouraged and advisable for one to help out and show kindness to his non-Muslim neighbors and acquaintances. If they need financial assistance, then they should be assisted. Nafl sadaqah may be given to them. The Ahaadith that advise one to fulfill the rights of the neighbors are general and inclusive of non-Muslims. A person will be rewarded for this. This also serves as an opportunity for one to display the teachings of Nabi ﷺ and the beauty of Islam.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
