Hijaab in the name of a woman

Fatwaa ID: 2042

Is a woman’s name parda?

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

A woman’s name is not ‘awrah/pardah. It is not necessary for her to conceal it nor use an agnoman or pen name instead. That is a personal choice. Shari’ah has not placed any restrictions on that. If a woman feels it more modest to conceal her name by using an agnomen, she may do that but she should not look down on those who choose not to do so. Likewise, she should not regard herself to be better for doing such.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
