Holding a baby in salaah

Fatwaa ID: 2034

Asalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh Respected Mufti Sahab,
I was praying salah behind Imam and my toddler was disturbing by sitting beside the person next to me.
So while getting up from sujood for next Rakah, I held him and put him in front of me so he doesn’t disturb other’s salah. To move him from one spot to other, I might have held him for 4-5 secs. I want to know if that salah was valid? Please note that my intention was just to move him from that spot.
JazakAllahu Khairan

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

In principle, doing any action in salaah that would constitute ‘amal katheer will invalidate the salaah. ‘Amal katheer refers to excessive or successive actions that is done by a person in salaah such that an onlooker would regard that person to be out of salaah. In the enquired situation, if it was with minimal movement like with one hand, then it did not constitute ‘amal katheer and the salaah was thus valid. It should be noted that intention in such cases is irrelevant. What is considered is the action itself.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
