Homeopathic medicine

Fatwaa ID: 1790

Question:
Assalaamu ‘alaykum wrwb respected mufti saahib,

In some liquid homeopathic medicines, specifically the mother tinctures, they have alcohol in them but it evaporates from the medicine. One Muslim homeopatician stated that “It’s not a sin as it is used for medicinal purposes and Is se nasha nahe aata.” Please let us know whether this is correct and whether it will be permissible to consume these liquid homeopathic medicines.

Jazaakumullaahu khayran

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

Alcohol is haraam and najis irrespective of whether it intoxicates or not. This is applicable for medicinal use as well. However, if a medicine which contains alcohol is prescribed by a reputable and competent medical professional, homeopathic or allopathic, and there are no adequate alternatives, then one will be excused to take the medicine as necessary. Even in such a case, the mashaayikh advise that one should make istighfaar.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
