Question:
Salaam. I would like to know if it’s permissible for a boy to hug his mother in law and similarly if a girl is allowed to hug her father in law. What if the father or mother in law says that they hug out of affection and not because of desire. Please Mufti sb if you can explain in detial. Jazakallah.
Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.
Parents-in-law are mahrams. It is permissible to hug them just as one hugs his/her own parents. The affection referred to in the query is perhaps a parent-child affection. There is no reason or need to abstain unless there is genuine fear of fitnah.
And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
