Hydrolyzed silk in shampoo

Fatwaa ID: 834

Question:
I used to use a certain hair conditioner for about 6 months and to me I haven’t used one since that I liked this much. In November I realized that the product has silk protein and as a man we are not allowed to wear silk. I haven’t used the product since November just in case as I haven’t been able to find out if we can use it. Is there anything that could help me find out if I can use the product as well as it’s styling products that also have silk protein?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

May Allaah Ta’aala bless you and reward for taking your precautions. That is a true quality of a believer.

It is permissible for men and women to use hair products containing hydrolyzed silk. The prohibition on men is regarding wearing silk. When a person uses shampoo or other hair products, that does not constitute wearing.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
