I have created you to worship me

Fatwaa ID: 903

Question:
Assalamualaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatahu Mufti saab,

This shaykh was explaining this hadith qudsi in a lecture and the hadith is the following:

My question is…is this a reliable hadith qudsi? One mentioned that this hadith is not in the kutub al-sittah. Please kindly advise Jazakumullah khair

The translation of the hadith qudsi:
“O son of Adam! I created you to worship me so do not behave in a casual irresponsible way. I have already distributed your sustenance so do not over exert yourself. If you are happy and content with what I have allotted to you, your heart and body will be at ease and you will regarded as praiseworthy according to me. If you are not happy with what I have allotted to you, then I will shower the world upon you, you will run around like a wild animal in the desert but you will still only receive what I have allotted for you and you will be regarded as blameworthy”

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

At the outset, we wish to clarify that just because a Hadith is not found in the Kutub as-Sittah, it does not mean by default that it is inauthentic. There are many Ahaadith that are authentic but found elsewhere. It is the chain of transmission and other factors that determine the authenticity.

Nevertheless, the narration in question is perhaps an Israelite narration. It is not a Hadith of Nabi ﷺ and may not be attributed to him. Some scholars suggest that this is narrated from Ka’b al-Ahbaar (R) who narrates it from the Torah. However, there is a similar Hadith narrated from Nabi ﷺ that echoes the meaning,

“Indeed Allah, Most High said, ‘O son of Adam! Devote yourself to My worship, I will fill your chest with riches and alleviate your poverty. And if you do not do so, then I will fill your hands with problems and never alleviate your poverty.'” [Tirmidhi 2466]

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
