I haven’t been covering my neck. Should I make up prayers?

Fatwaa ID: 1599

I converted to Islam a couple months ago and I’m just now realizing that I (accidentally) haven’t been covering my neck while praying. Should I haven’t make up the prayers?

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

It is pleasing to note your conversion to Islam. May Allaah Ta’aala make it easy for you and keep you steadfast upon the Deen.

In principle, if a quarter of a limb from the ‘awrah is uncovered intentionally, ignorantly or neglectfully, then the salaah will be invalid immediately. If it is uncovered accidentally or mistakenly, then the salaah will be invalidated if it remains uncovered for the duration of three tasbeehs. The neck and the throat are from the ‘awrah of a woman and must be covered.

In the enquired situation, you will have to repeat your salaahs that you performed with neck uncovered. You do not have to do this all in one day. Make a schedule and gradually make them up. Take this as a chance and opportunity to get closer to Allaah Ta’aala. Each and every sajdah is a step closer to Him.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
