I wont be able to fast this Ramadhan

Fatwaa ID: 2188

Assalamu Alaikum,

Due to health issues, I won’t be able to fast this Ramadan. Also, not sure if my health will permit to make up the fasts later, everything is uncertain at this moment. Do I need to give fidya for each missed fast? If so, please advise how much it would be in US dollar?

Also, any recommendation on organizations where I can pay the fidya online?

JazakAllah Khair

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

May Allaah Ta’aala grant you complete shifaa. If you are unable to fast due to health reasons, you would be excused to delay them until afterwards when you are better. There is no fidyah for this delay. Likewise, you cannot substitute the make up with fidyah. If there is a possibility or hope of you being able to ever fast afterwards, then you must postpone the fast until then.

Fidyah is only permissible for those people who are genuinely unable to fast and have no hope of being able to fast ever again. This is generally applicable to people with terminal sicknesses or extreme old age that physically prevent them from fasting. In such a case, fidyah for each day is equivalent to the Sadaqatul Fitr amount, which is a minimum of $8 USD. If they become better after having paid the fidyah, then they would have to make up the missed fasts and their fidyahs would become nafl sadaqah.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
