‘Iddah in son’s home

Fatwaa ID: 276

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته
Respected Mufti Sahab,

Would it be permissible for an elderly woman to do part of her iddah in her son’s home (1.5hrs drive away from her late husband’s house) for a period of approx. 1 week in which there would be no family close by to help her with her needs?

جزاكم الله خيرا

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

In principle, a widow must observe the ‘iddah in her marital home. However, if she requires assistance due to old age and there is no one present in her marital home, she will be excused to spend the ‘iddah elsewhere. In the enquired situation, she will be excused to spend the ‘iddah for the said duration at her son’s place.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
