Imaam receives more reward

Fatwaa ID: 1737

Salam, is there anything from the sunnah that indicates the imam or the one leading the prayer get any more reward then the one he’s leading?

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

The virtue and reward of the imaam is surely greater than that of the muqtadee. Consider the following for some of them,

a. An imaam directs and facilatites a great ‘ibaadah, salaah. He thus gets the reward of the salaah of all those that are praying behind him. Rasulullaah ﷺ said, “The one who directs towards good is like the one who does it.”

b. The imaam recites the Qur’aan while the muqtadee listens. Reciting is more rewarding then listening. Furthermore, when others listen, he gets their rewards as well.

c. The imaam bears a great responsibility as Rasulullaah ﷺ had mentioned. When he fulfills this responsibility appropriately, he will be rewarded accordingly. Likewise, the legal maxim “the greater the burden, the more the reward” will be applicable here.

d. Rasulullaah ﷺ mentioned that three individuals will be on heaps of musk on the Day of Qiyaamah. One of them is a man who lead the salaah and the congregants were pleased with him. (Tirmidhi)

e. Rasulullaah ﷺ lead the salaahs. Hence, leading salaah is a sunnah as well. A person would be rewarding for acting upon the sunnah.

f. It is reported in one hadith that a man asked Nabi ﷺ to advise him regarding an action he should. He ﷺ advised him to become the imam of his people. (Ibn Abi Shaybah 3830)

g. Rasulullaah ﷺ made du’aa for the imaams, “O Allaah! Keep the imaams guided.” (Tirmidhi)

The above is just in regards to leading the salaah. If the position of an imaam is fully considered, then the rewards are much more.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
