Fatwaa ID: 711
As salam alaykum. What is the hanafi standpoint for an imam to wear short sleeves shirt to lead prayer in a mosque.
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.
An imaam is someone who is a mentor and guide to his people. He should wear respectable Islamic attire when leading the congregation. He is distinct from the others. Thus, it will be advisable for him to wear a jubbah/jalabiyyah/qamees instead of a shirt. As far as short sleeve itself is concerned, that is permissible. The salaah will be valid without any reprehension. He may wear short sleeved qameeses when leading the prayer.
And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
