Informing the patient of her sickness

Fatwaa ID: 2197

Asalamalaikum wharehmetulahi wabarakatuh, My mother in law has stage 4 cancer with no cure. She’s 88 years old, and my wife has not told her that she has it. Islamicaly is she required to know, and are we doing something wrong by not telling her?

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

May Allaah Ta’aala grant your mother-in-law complete shifaa and make it easy for her and the family. It is not necessary to get a medical diagnosis. Likewise, it is not necessary to tell the patient regarding his/her medical issues especially if it may be difficult on the patient or cause harm. In the enquired situation, you do not need to tell her about her own situation if you feel that it is the best way going ahead. However, your wife must do her best to assist and serve her mother. This is a great opportunity for her to earn her Jannah. Likewise, if you help her and serve her for the sake of Allaah Ta’aala, you would be greatly rewarded.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
