Is beef halal by default?

Fatwaa ID: 513

Question:
Can beef from a ‘halal’ meat market assumed to be zabiha if one does not know its source?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

It is unfortunately difficult to assume that beef sold at a restaurant or market is halaal by default. Aside from the rampant dishonesty, negligence and ignorance from many regarding their halaal supply, many abattoirs now opt for a vertical cut when slaughtering larger animals. A vertical cut does not fulfill the requirements of a halaal slaughter, i.e., three of the four veins/pipes have to be cut. Further verification should be made prior to purchasing from these establishments, and this could be tideous.
It is for this reason that it is important to have third party certification boards that regularly inspect and monitor restaurants, slaughterhouses and plants, stores, etc. We advise the general public to encourage their local restaurants and establishments to get certified. When there is a demand from the consumers, then the suppliers comply.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
