Is it necessary for a couple to sleep together?

Fatwaa ID: 1226

Question:
السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته
Hope and pray you’re well in sha Allah
Wanted to ask in shariah does a couple have to physically sleep together every night ? Is it haram if they sleep separately due to other reasons? In this situation, the wife suffers from insomnia and needs complete silence for her to get a proper sleep. The husband on the other hand is a restless sleeper and will keep waking her up by talking, moving, banging the radiators (the radiator is next to the bed). He will also set a few alarms but due to his deep sleep he wont hear them so she has to wake up and turn them off. There is also a baby in the room who is constantly waking her up. All these factors cause the wife frustration and this affects her mood during the day and also impacts the relationship.
Keeping all of this in mind, is it haram for the couple to agree to sleep separately? because normally separation of beds is one of the steps taken before a divorce.
Note- physical intimacy and other mutual rights are taken care of, but when it comes to sleep and for the sake of peace in the marriage, she needs a peaceful night. This maslah is slightly urgent please let me know . JazakAllah

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

While it is generally encouraged for the husband and wife to sleep together to ensure a healthy marital life, the Shari’ah has not made it necessary. It is up to the couple to mutually decide and sleep as they wish. In all cases, they should ensure that their marriage is stable and healthy.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
