Question:
As salaamu alaikum
A query from a sister..
There are some women who while reading salaah, sit before and after the 2 sujoods.
Is this correct?
They call it Jalsa Istihaara..
Does it differ from Hanafi and Shafiee mathab?
What effect does this have on the correctness of the salaah?
Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.
We understand from your query that you are referring to Jalsah Istiraahah (إستراحة). This is a brief sitting after the two sujoods after the first and third rak’ahs before rising to the second and fourth. This is from the sunnah according to the Shaafi’ee legal school. The Hanafis opine that this is not a sunnah, although an elderly person or one with difficulty would be excused to sit here. As for sitting before the two sujoods, this is baseless according to both schools.
And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
