Janaazah in the masjid

Fatwaa ID: 1263

Question:
If janazah is prayed in the main hall of the masjid without any excuse for not praying outside. Should one still pray the janazah?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

In principle, according to the Hanafi legal school, it is prohibitively disliked to perform Janaazah Salaah in the masjid if there is sufficient space outside. If sufficient space is not available outside or there is a valid reason to perform it inside, then there is no reprehension. You may consider advising the trustees of the masjid regarding this if there is sufficient space outside and if the community predominantly follows the Hanafi legal school.

Unless your absence will make a genuine difference, which is very rare, you should join the Janaazah Salaah. You should not miss out of the great rewards. The onus will be on trustees of the masjid.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
