Jinn Shaykh/ spiritual guide

Fatwaa ID: 632

Question:
Asalaamu alaykum. Can one have a jinn as a spiritual guide? And wouldn’t this be impermissible?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

At the outset, it is not clear whether this is a genuine question or simply a troll. If it is the latter, then we advise you to respect yourself and the time of others. Nevertheless, we will answer your query, giving you the benefit of the doubt.

Whether or not it is physically possible for a jinn to be a spiritual guide for a human being is a separate issue beyond the scope of this fatwaa. As far as practicalities are concerned, a spiritual guide or mentor must be someone the student or disciple is able to relate with. It is for this reason that Allaah Ta’aala sent human beings as prophets to us, not angels. A jinn and a human being are not the same and will not be able to relate adequately to each other. Furthermore, there is no shortage of people that one may take as spiritual guides. This is aside from the fact that we have been advised to maintain our distance from jinnkind.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
