Job as a cashier

Fatwaa ID: 1795

Question:
Asalam Alaykum dear sheikh and mufti , how are you ?

I have a fiqh concern . Should I look for a better job ? In this job I’m a cashier at a mainly sporting goods clothing store in the mall and I’m inevitably exposed to immodest woman constantly almost the entire time I’m there working . Should I immediately quit this job ? And another thing is that kids come here to buy candies with pork gelatin . Should I immediately quit this job and go do something else more halal ?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

We commend you for your concerns. May Allaah Ta’aala reward you and place barakah in your wealth.

There are two issues: the permissibility of your work and its conduciveness. Your job as a cashier is permissible and the income you make therefrom is permissible. You are paid by the hour, not for what you scan. However, as you have stated that you are exposed to immodest woman constantly, this is not conducive for your imaan and spirituality. A person is affected by what he sees and hears. We advise you to search for an alternative job that would be spiritually healthy. You do not need to quit immediately but actively search while you maintain your current job.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
