Question:
Salam Alaikum,
I have a question that I searched about in internet although I found an answer I’m still in doubt and I’m very worried especially that it will be a life changing decision for me
Thank you first for taking the time to answer, I work currently in a Chemical company that sells ingredients such as colors, botanicals and flavours to the food production industries, I work in it’s branch in a muslim country but I found out that we sell some of the flavours to Alcoholic beverage company of course my task isn’t involved in the alcoholic business cause that’s not what my company does and I read the hadith from the prophet SAWS the company doesn’t fit in any category cause we don’t sell alcohol but what we do here is selecting an ingredient from system and send it to any food industries and only 1% or less a year we get a request for an ingredient for alcoholic business cause we are in a muslim country.
This has been stressing me a lot cause I have been actively applying for jobs and I’m not being invited even to an interview the job I have now is good for many reasons and I live with my old parents I know if I leave this job it will stress them cause I support them too and it will be difficult to find another with the crisis happening so I didn’t want to take an impulsive decision and quite the job. I’m doing istikhara everyday and of course I’m actively applying because I prefer to work with a clear conscience then be in this state.
My question is my work not permissible in this case?, what would you advise me to do? because I didn’t know who to ask for nasiha and where to find the right information. thank you and Jazakum Allah Khayra
Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.
We take note of the details of your query. Your concern and zeal to ensure Shari’ah compliance of your job is commendable. May Allaah Ta’aala place barakah in your sustenance and life.
Your job in question is permissible and Shari’ah compliant. You do not need to search for an alternative job. The occasional transactions of the company with an alcoholic company will not affect your income nor are you responsible for that. You may keep your job.
We wish to advise you that searching the internet is not the solution nor the method to learn about Deen. Searching the internet for Islamic matters may leave you confused and lost. Instead, consult with the scholars directly. The best is to connect with your local scholars who are competent and reliable. If they are unable to assist, then you expand abroad to reputable scholars or institutes. May Allaah Ta’aala keep you happy.
And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
