Question:
Assalamualaikum Mufti Sahab, a person was paying mortgage on conventional home loan for 12 months but moved to Shariah compliant after that. What is the kaffara on him for those 12 months?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

It is pleasing to note that the person in reference has chosen to do the right thing. May Allaah Ta’aala bless him and keep him steadfast upon the Deen.

There is no kaffaarah for what has passed. Sincere tawbah and istighfaar however must be made. It will be advisable for him to regularly give nafl sadaqah.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
