I have a question, is it permissable to lead a prayer over the phone. There’s this girl who never prayed and since she lives distant, she wants me to call her and lead namaaz so she gets an idea of how it goes
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.
For the validity of a congregation, the imaam and the follower must be together physically in the same place. Accordingly, it will not be permissible to “lead” a salaah over the phone. The salaah will be invalid.
There are enough alternatives to show or teach someone how to pray if you cannot physically be with them. You may tell them without leading them. Likewise, there are enough literatures and videos available that one can learn from. You may connect them with some nearby who can guide them.
It should be noted that according to the Hanafi legal school, it is prohibitively disliked for a female to lead other females in salaah. The other legal schools permit it and even encourage it. This is obviously in regards to physical congregations. Virtual congregations, as stated above, are invalid.
And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
