Lied during interviews

Fatwaa ID: 1437

Question:
Asslamualaikum,

I hope all is well mufti sahib.

during my college years i was interviewing for internships. During the interview process for the internship I had exagerated some details with regards to some of my experience(for example I would say that my project saved my previous company 500k dollars but in fact my project was never implemented). i also exaggerated(maybe even lied) about some details on the behavioral questions.

After doing all of that in the interview I recieved the internship and becuase i did well in the internship I got a full time offer(which i will be starting in july). Now the question is that is my income halal for both my internship and my future fulltime position(I will be a production engineer at a major oil and gas firm). Can you please provide proofs for this answer.

I know lying is a sin and I have repented for the act and will try my best to not do it again

With regards to waswas. I have been having many waswas that my wealth and income is haram becuase of the senarios mentioned above. The reason as to why this happens is that whenever I read or watch certain islamqa video most of them say my income is halal but a small portion give confused answers. How do I know which one is right. since for months this senario has been plauging me where it is affecting my worship. please help

here is a link to where the answer was confusing me: https://www.islamweb.net/en/fatwa/84112/lied-on-cv

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

We take note of the details of your query. A Muslim ought to live a truthful and honest life. There is khayr and barakah in that. You state that you have made tawbah for the wrong you have done. May Allaah Ta’aala accept your repentance.

Nevertheless, the job that you have landed after the internship will be permissible. Likewise, the income you make therefrom will also be permissible. You are paid for the work that you do, not necessarily your experiences and qualifications.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
